The camera also captures 640-by-480 still images. A bright light on the back of the camera illuminates the immediate area for capturing video in low-light conditions. The VM4500's video capture mode is a secondary feature from our perspective, but the 15-second clips we captured and played back, complete with audio, were surprisingly clear. Sprint PCS has only three Ready Link phones, and Verizon Wireless offers just one Push to Talk model. Unlike with voice calling, there is no cross-carrier two-way radio service, so companies should carefully analyze coverage in areas where they want to realize investment benefits from walkie-talkie technology.Īs far as the phones themselves go, Nextel has an advantage in that all its models work with its Direct Connect network. You press and hold a button on the side of the phone to talk, releasing the button when done, which opens the floor for another speaker. If the Ready Link customer you're calling is available, your phone beeps and a "Floor Is Open" message appears on the screen, which means you can talk.Ī Ready Link call can have up to five participants, but only one person at a time can talk. The video capability does allow you to take advantage of the extra-cost Sprint PCS video mail service, though, which lets you store video clips online or send them to computers or other PCS Vision Video Phones. Those not interested in two-way radio features might find the VM4500's surprisingly capable video mode intriguing, but that alone isn't enough to prompt a phone upgrade. If you're already using Nextel's two-way radio service, the VM4500 may not be a good enough reason to switch, but if you're a Sprint PCS customer who has yearned for fast, inexpensive walkie-talkie convenience, the Ready Link option could keep you from leaving.
